Overcoming Fear

“Fear has a large shadow, but he himself is small.”- Ruth Gendler

There have been many occasions that I have stopped myself from experiences because of being scared. Many times I am a ball of fear. With that I have limited my life in certain ways. At the start of this year, I decided to change that and do what scares me. To confront my fears. One example is that I have been afraid of flying. It’s not that I am terrified of planes, take off or turbulence. It is more of being afraid of missing my flight, not understanding how to find where the connecting flight is, or even something not working out right. Honestly the most simplest of things would make me nervous when flying. Yet I thought to myself if I want to travel and see new places, I have to do it. I need to go through all the motions/steps of flying and learn along the way. When I went to Las Vegas in January, I traveled alone for the first time. So I took a deep breath before entering the airport and told myself I would be fine. In the end, I made it successfully with no problems at all and I never encountered any of my fears.

We should never let anxiety or living in fear stop us form enjoying life. Go places yourself or with a group if you know you will have a great time. Of course trust your judgement and instinct if the situation is safe or not. Ask plenty of questions if you ever need assistance or help understanding something. Mostly when facing your fears, whether that is flying or giving a presentation, breathe. Everything will work out the way it is meant to. Take as many baby steps that you need, for everyone goes at a different pace.
