Five Winter Traditions
Each season holds different routines or traditions that we put forth into daily life. For winter it is a time to be cozy, warm and spending time with others. I know for me there are five traditions, I do each year when the cold season appears. Below are my favorite past times in winter!
Reading Wuthering Heights
One book that I have read over 50 times, is the classic Wuthering Heights. I do read it any time of the year, yet there is something about turning the pages of the Gothic romance during end of fall and in winter. It may be the fact that the season is dark and cold making it go hand in hand with the supernatural themes in the novel. For me it is the perfect time to read any and all books, but I grab this one first.
Holiday Movies
I am a person who enjoys watching the Hallmark Channel for all the Christmas movies . But there are two movies that I make sure to watch each year. The two comedies are Jingle All The Way and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. I have been watching these family fun movies since I was a child. Both are my absolute favorites that sometimes I will randomly watch them though out the year!
Baking
During this time of the year I am in charge of baking cookies left and right. I have shared in a previous post my molasses cookie recipe that I make every year. There are two family recipes that we all make together, nut roll and pizzelles’. My family has passed down the recipes for years to each generation. Making it a holiday tradition of getting everyone in the kitchen together.
Light Sight Seeing
Another family activity that we all do together is light sight seeing for the holidays. Of course we go around the neighborhood and see the lights on TV shows. But we try to at least every year head down to Oglebay in West Virginia. The resort puts up a light show that takes close to a half hour or so to drive through. With warm beverages and cookies in your stomach, you can witness all the beautiful larger than life light displays of different holiday scenes around the car. It is my favorite place to go for holiday cheer!
Anything and Everything Disney
Lastly during this time of year, my family and I love spending time down in Disney World. Ever since I was a child, if we could would make our once a year vacation trip to the most magical place. Seeing the parks all decorated for the holidays brings so much happiness. If we did not go to Disney for the holidays, we would watch the Christmas movies and parades on TV. There is just something about how the company does the holidays, that make you feel like a kid who believes in magic all over again. I will always be a Disney child at heart.
These are my top five fun winter traditions. Sometimes they change depending upon the year. But I try to do each of them when December rolls around. Let me know below in the comments what some of your traditions are during this time of the year!
